Tradition states that every bride needs “something old, something new, something borrowed and something blue”. And for this bride and groom, they already knew their perfect something blue, their two adorable little girls.
Our two petite Belle’s, AJ and SR, had their dresses commissioned by mum and bride Aleesa, co-founder, Emily’s little big sister, for her June wedding. It was extremely special for Emily to be able to create such stunning gowns for her nieces.
"I wanted my girls to be a special part of our day and to have their own moment in the traditional side of our wedding as my 'something blue'."
For the girls’ first custom couture, every trim, fabric and silhouette focused on the tradition of the old classic wedding poem. “Something blue” symbolises fidelity and purity; traditionally, this is a gift from the groom for the bride to wear. However, this bride decided the best gift she has ever been given is her children.
The main layer of the fabric is a vintage dusty blue organza, with floral embroidered blue vintage trim, in other words, “something old”. The bride and our head designer chose the vintage fabric for its softer feel, which modern fabric doesn’t have. As the flower girls are both under five, it was important to both the bride and designer that the girls feel comfortable in their princess gowns. And since the wedding was in the country, using fabric sourced from vintage country markets felt like the perfect choice.

The design was a classic little girl dress. Simple bodice and gathered skirt, it was really important to have the dresses be adjustable. The waist trim can be tied at the back, both for a fun bow feature and to perfectly fit each girl. This was the same idea behind the adjustable sleeves. The bride wanted bows wherever a bow could be, and the straps are the perfect place for a couple of bows, with the bonus of adjustability. As children are consistently growing, it’s important for the dress to be able to account for any growth that may have happened between measurements to add the final finishing touches to the gown.

Another small detail we added as a surprise was a custom, hand-embroidered name tag. Although the embroidery is not perfect, our head designer wanted to add a personal touch to her niece’s gowns.
Yet toddlers will be toddlers; one dress was a little worse for wear by the end of the evening. After the ceremony, AJ could not help herself and rolled down the hills, jumped in the paddock to feed cows and found every muddy puddle a working cattle farm has to offer, as all good party animals do. But mum wouldn’t have it any other way.
"The dresses might be a little worse for wear from the girls muddy fun after the ceremony, but it's a testament to Belle Ame's seamstresses that after a clean and a couple of little fixes I have beautiful keepsakes for the girls from Mum and Dad's special day."
